Master of Arts in English is a two-year degree programme.Two years course is divided into 4 semesters.

A degree in English Literature equips students with advanced analytical, interpretative, and communicative skills that are highly valued across a wide range of professions. The programme’s interdisciplinary nature and emphasis on critical thinking, research, and expression prepare graduates to engage meaningfully in both academic and professional contexts.

Graduates of the programme may pursue careers in education and academia as teachers, lecturers, or researchers; in media and communication as journalists, editors, copywriters, or public relations professionals; and in creative industries as writers, poets, playwrights, or editors. They are also well-suited for roles in corporate and administrative sectors, including human resources, technical writing, and training and development. Furthermore, the degree provides a strong foundation for competitive examinations and positions in civil services, cultural organizations, and non-governmental sectors that focus on education, environment, and social development.

The study of English Literature fosters adaptability, cultural awareness, and ethical responsibility—qualities essential in a globalized world. With opportunities for higher studies and research, graduates are well-prepared to contribute to academia, the creative arts, and the broader intellectual and professional community.

PSO1: A student develops a clear idea about the subject Education, like nature,

scope and aim of Education, factors, different agencies of education and child centric Education.

PSO2: A student gathers knowledge about Educational Psychology, theoriesand their implication in the field of education and education system.
PSO3: A student develops knowledge about the detailed history of the Indian Education system.
PSO3: A student develops knowledge about the detailed history of the Indian Education system.

PSO4: A student internalises the basics of Sociology, relation between Sociology

and Education and importance of Educational Sociology in the field of Education.

PSO5: A student develops knowledge about basic of Indian as well as Western

Philosophy. S/he also develops knowledge about the importance of different schools of philosophy in the field of Education.

PSO6: A student develops the concept of guidance and counselling, various types of guidance and basic data necessary for guidance.
PSO7: A student develops the concept of educational research and statistics to develop skill in analysing descriptive measures, concept of Normal Probability Curve and its uses in education, measures of relationship and organize relevant educational data and to represent educational data through graphs and to develop skill in analysing and displaying data.

Competence

PSO1: A learner demonstrates competencies required to use computers in education, communication, ICT & e-learning for implementing instructional techniques and different models of teaching.
PSO2: A student will analyse the detailed history of Indian education system.
PSO3: A student will systematise the concepts of adjustment, maladjustment and the various interpretations of the psychological tests.
PSO4: A student will correlate various qualitative and quantitative data for educational research.
PSO5: A student will envision a society where people from all walks of life enjoy equal and equitable rights and opportunities.
PSO6: A student will compute statistical analysis in the field of educational research.
PSO7: A student will analyse the contemporary trends in education.

To pursue Masters In English  candidate should have 3 Year  B.A. Degree from any recognized college or University or its Equivalent.

The English department, one of the oldest departments of the college, promotes an inter-disciplinary, non-canonical approach towards literature. It encourages students to go beyond the traditional genres of literature and explore other literatures in English and translation. The department started its MA English program in 2016 and plans to introduce research programmes in literature in order to facilitate meaningful research in the North Bengal region. The Department is committed to promoting inter-disciplinary research and imparting the CBCS curriculum in keeping with contemporary critical approaches in literature. The courses currently offered by the department are: BA Honours in English literature, Elective English for BA General Degree Course students, Communicative English for the COP programme and Masters in English literature.

The Department of English, Salesian College (Autonomous) envisages empowering the students to develop and build knowledge of the content and methods of literary studies, academic, professional, creative and critical reading/ writing, thereby championing in undergraduate/postgraduate research, knowledge creation, and reaching to the marginalized.
