Introduction
The Department of Mathematics was established at Salesian College, Siliguri Campus in 2013 with the objective of expanding the College’s offerings in pure science disciplines. Transacting a demanding subject that offers significant rewards, the Department has consistently produced graduates who excel in both academic and professional fields.
Vision
The Department is dedicated to fostering critical, logical, and rational thinking among students. By promoting the discipline and rigour of mathematics, it prepares students for advanced studies and diverse career opportunities, while also encouraging collaboration across disciplines to support the holistic development of society.
Mission
The Department strives to deliver relevant and inspiring pedagogy. Its mission centres on a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts, cultivating a scientific outlook, and encouraging rational thought. Special emphasis is placed on providing rights-based education to disadvantaged groups and equipping all students with skills essential for success in both industry and academia.
Academic and Cocurricular Activities
To support the all-round development of its students, the Department organises a range of academic and cocurricular activities. These include student seminars, participation in national conferences, Mathematics Day celebrations, and study tours. Notably, in the last year itself, students have been selected for prestigious programmes such as the Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) camp at the University of North Bengal, as well as a mathematics camp at IIT Delhi.
Student Leadership and Recognition
Students from the Department play a proactive role in organising flagship events, including eComPhyMathix and TechnoKrat at the Deanery level, in addition to college-level events such as Exsurge and Innovision. In the current year, students have earned distinctions such as Player of the Tournament at the Taverna Trophy 2025, Best Dancer at Innovision 2025, and Best Band at Exsurge 2025, among other honours.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, the Department of Mathematics remains steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, comprehensive student development, and societal progress. By fostering an environment that promotes intellectual curiosity, innovation, and collaboration, the Department ensures its students are well-prepared to embrace the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
