Bachelor of Arts in Geography is a four-year degree programme with the possibility of completing the fourth year with research if a particular student secures 75% CGPA in the previous exams.

Programme Objective

  1. To equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts, theories, and principles of physical and human geography, and their interrelationships at local, regional, and global scales.
  2. To develop the ability to critically analyze geographical phenomena using spatial reasoning, logical argumentation, and problem-solving skills grounded in empirical evidence and geographical thought.
  3. To cultivate a research-oriented mindset by introducing students to scientific methods, data collection techniques, cartographic tools, and geospatial technologies (such as GIS and Remote Sensing) for analyzing and interpreting geographical data.
  4. To enable students to apply geographical knowledge in understanding and addressing real-world environmental and socio-economic challenges, such as urbanization, climate change, resource management, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.
  5. To encourage collaborative learning and teamwork by engaging students in field-based studies, group projects, and interdisciplinary academic exercises that reflect the dynamic and integrative nature of geography.
  6. To instill in students a sense of responsibility toward society and the environment by fostering awareness of issues related to equity, inclusivity, ecological sustainability, and ethical considerations in geographical research and practice.

Programme Outcome

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Explain and differentiate the fundamental concepts, theories, and principles of physical and human geography, and interpret their interrelationships across different spatial scales.
  2. Analyze spatial patterns and geographical phenomena using critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving approaches supported by empirical data and theoretical perspectives.
  3. Design and conduct basic geographical research using field surveys, cartographic techniques, and geospatial tools such as GIS and Remote Sensing for data analysis and interpretation.
  4. Apply geographical knowledge to assess and propose solutions for contemporary environmental and socio-economic issues, including climate change, urbanization, and sustainable resource management.
  5. Work effectively in teams during fieldwork and group projects, and communicate geographical findings clearly through maps, reports, presentations, and digital media.
  6. Demonstrate awareness of ethical issues, social equity, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability, and exhibit responsibility toward society and the environment in their academic and professional practices.

Eligibility for Application

Passed Higher Secondary School Leaving Examination with minimum of 55 % marks.

Online Entrance Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

* Scanned copies of the class 10, 11/12 marks card should be uploaded while filling up the application.

* If class 12 marks are not available at the time of applying, then marks of any test conducted during class 11 or Pre-board, can be uploaded.

* The office of admissions will verify the scorecards.

* Applications with no scorecards or vague scanned copies will be rejected and termed as Not Eligible.

The Department of Geography, Salesian College, Siliguri Campus was established in the year 2012. The department is focused on equipping students with geographical knowledge, analytical and life skills coupled with practical application with a multi-dimensional approach. The department prioritizes preparing informed and responsible citizens through innovative, engaged, and relevant teaching. 

The department distinguishes itself through a thorough curriculum that emphasizes on applied studies, particularly in relation to the subject. These immersive experiences not only enhance academic understanding but also foster practical skills that are essential in real-world applications. The department is presently well equipped with Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratories, various Ground Survey instruments, a Map Interpretation laboratory, etc.
