Bachelor of Arts in English is a four-year degree programme with the possibility of completing the fourth year with research if a particular student secures 75% CGPA in the previous exams.

Programme Objectives

The Bachelor of Arts in English is a four-year degree programme with an optional research component in the fourth year for students achieving a minimum CGPA of 75%. The programme offers a comprehensive understanding of English literature, tracing its historical development and exploring its social, political, and cultural contexts. Students engage with diverse literatures, literary forms, and theoretical perspectives to develop critical and creative insights into both traditional and contemporary issues.

The programme also builds essential skills in research, writing, and presentation, fostering independent thought and social awareness. By applying literary and cultural theories to real-world concerns such as the environment, gender, and marginality, students grow into informed and reflective individuals. Ultimately, the programme promotes cultural sensitivity, lifelong learning, and a sense of national and global responsibility—preparing graduates for meaningful academic and professional pursuits.

PSO4: A student develops knowledge about the interconnections and interrelations across disciplines and cultures by studying world literatures including Indian writing in English.
PSO5: A student develops knowledge about the gendered aspect of writing and gain awareness about the issues and concerns of women writers and women’s writing as a separate genre.
PSO6: A student develops understanding of different concepts like Modern/Modernity/Modernism amongst others.
PSO7: A student develops understanding of critical literary and cultural theories to interpret and analyze texts.

* If class 12 marks are not available at the time of applying, then marks of any test conducted during class 11 or Pre-board, can be uploaded.

The English department, one of the oldest departments of the college, promotes an inter-disciplinary, non-canonical approach towards literature. It encourages students to go beyond the traditional genres of literature and explore other literatures in English and translation. The department started its MA English program in 2016 and plans to introduce research programmes in literature in order to facilitate meaningful research in the North Bengal region. The Department is committed to promoting inter-disciplinary research and imparting the CBCS curriculum in keeping with contemporary critical approaches in literature. The courses currently offered by the department are: BA Honours in English literature, Elective English for BA General Degree Course students, Communicative English for the COP programme and Masters in English literature.
