Bachelor of Arts in English is a four-year degree programme with the possibility of completing the fourth year with research if a particular student secures 75% CGPA in the previous exams.

After completion of the programme, a student will be able to:

KnowledgePO01: Acquaint oneself with the history of English literature and understand its social, political, and historical context
PO02: Gain understanding of the growth of diverse literatures and the English language.
PO03: Relate one’s understanding to explore identity, values, manners, and morals through different engagements
PO04: Grasp literary forms, types, literary theory and gain an alternate understanding of the contemporary issues of the modern world.
SkillsPO06: Construct writing projects like essays, short-stories, poems
PO07: Develop presentation skills with discussions, debates, public-speaking, and integrating ICT.
PO08: Acquaint oneself with the diverse current issues like environmental crisis, climate change, gender discrimination, marginality, and politics through reading of relevant literature.
CompetencePO09: Explore new/revised understanding of issues through the application of literary and cultural theories.
PO10: Initiate self-sufficiency, sincerity, independent thinking as research and education is a lifelong process for empowering the student to face all challenges in their future endeavours, and develop new ideas and new understanding.
PO11: Develop concern for the society and nation through understanding of regional and vernacular literatures and comparing our literary content, themes, and usage of language with that of literatures of other developing countries.

Instructions

* Scanned copies of the class 10, 11/12 marks card should be uploaded while filling up the application.

* If class 12 marks are not available at the time of applying, then marks of any test conducted during class 11 or Pre-board, can be uploaded.

* The office of admissions will verify the scorecards.

* Applications with no scorecards or vague scanned copies will be rejected and termed as Not Eligible.

INTRODUCTION

The English department, one of the oldest departments of the college, promotes an inter-disciplinary, non-canonical approach towards literature. It encourages students to go beyond the traditional genres of literature and explore other literatures in English and translation. The department started its MA English program in 2016 and plans to introduce research programmes in literature in order to facilitate meaningful research in the North Bengal region. The Department is committed to promoting inter-disciplinary research and imparting the CBCS curriculum in keeping with contemporary critical approaches in literature. The courses currently offered by the department are: BA Honours in English literature, Elective English for BA General Degree Course students, Communicative English for the COP programme and Masters in English literature.

The Department of English (UG & PG) of Salesian College envisages to empower the students to develop and build knowledge of the content and methods of literary studies, academic, professional, creative and critical reading/ writing thereby championing in undergraduate/ postgraduate research, knowledge creation and reaching to the marginalized.
