Siliguri, 10 May 2026: The Supreme Court of India has announced the appointment of Professor Dwaipayan Bharadwaj as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of North Bengal (NBU). The decision, finalized by a search‑cum‑selection committee headed by former Chief Justice U.U. Lalit, comes after a prolonged impasse over VC appointments in West Bengal universities.
Professor Bharadwaj, a distinguished academic from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, is widely recognized for his pioneering research in human genetics and functional genomics, with a special focus on complex metabolic disorders such as diabetes. At JNU, he has led groundbreaking studies on genome‑wide association (GWAS), exploring genetic diversity across populations and its implications for public health. His work has been published in leading international journals, including Nature and Nature Genetics, earning him global recognition and over 8,000 citations.
With this announcement, the University of North Bengal is poised to enter a new phase of academic governance, though the formal assumption of office by Professor Bharadwaj is awaited. His appointment signals a research‑driven vision for NBU, aligning with the transformative goals of NEP 2020 and strengthening interdisciplinary teaching and innovation.
This development is part of a wider resolution across the state, with all 36 universities now having full‑term Vice Chancellors following the Supreme Court’s intervention. END
