The Department of History, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an intra-departmental debate competition on August 29, 2024, at JPM Hall. The topic, “Can Plastic Bags Be Completely Banned or Not?” brought together students from the 1st, 3rd, and 5th semesters, fostering a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
A total of 22 teams participated in the event, each team composed of two members. The competition adhered to a structured format, allowing each team four minutes to present their arguments on the motion. The participants were judged by Dr. Dipankar Rudra, Associate Professor of Management Studies, and Sangam Ghatani, Head of the Department and Assistant Professor of Political Science.
The event commenced with a prayer led by the Vice Principal of Arts and Humanities, setting a reflective tone for the debate that followed. Throughout the competition, students presented a range of perspectives, addressing the environmental, economic, and social implications of a complete ban on plastic bags.
In the end, Team 6, consisting of Suruchi Chhetri and Vaidehi Moktan, emerged victorious. They convincingly argued that a complete ban on plastic bags is both feasible and necessary for environmental preservation. Their well-researched arguments and clear presentation earned them high praise from the judges.
The debate underscored the complexities involved in implementing environmental policies and highlighted the need for balanced, evidence-based approaches. The discussion provided valuable insights into the potential benefits and challenges of banning plastic bags, encouraging further dialogue on sustainable practices within the academic community.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Professor Anukta Gairola, followed by a group photo to commemorate the event.
